BD Diagnostics Acquires Dynacon's Lab Systems Division

By LabMedica International staff writers

With the acquisition that closed late March 2010, BD Diagnostics gets Dynacon's preanalytical specimen processors, which help increase laboratory efficiency and automate the modern microbiology laboratory.

BD Diagnostics a segment of Becton, Dickinson and Company (Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA) expanded its diagnostics portfolio with the acquisition of Dynacon's (Ontario, Canada) lab systems division for an undisclosed sum. More...
BD Diagnostics obtained preanalytical, microbiology automation platforms including InocuLAB and Innova, which complement its infectious disease testing line.

The Innova system, a versatile, high-throughput specimen processor, helps address laboratories' increasing needs for preanalytical specimen processing automation. These needs have arisen because of labor shortages and/or increasing test volumes. Innova also helps reduce laboratory errors associated with specimen handling. The Innova system accommodates the full range of microbiology specimen containers, streak patterns, protocols, and workflows. The InocuLAB system has been used in clinical labs in North America and Europe routinely for nine years.

"Today's clinical microbiology laboratories face many challenges, chief among them are a shortage of laboratory professionals and an increase in workload," said Philippe Jacon, president, diagnostic systems, BD. "The addition of Dynacon's Lab Systems portfolio demonstrates BD's commitment to providing labs with the tools and products they need to enhance the quality of their tests results, improve turnaround times, and make the most cost-effective use of their resources."

BD Diagnostics is a leader of products and instruments used for diagnosing infectious diseases. The products are used in the clinical market to screen for microbial presence, grow and identify organisms, and test for antibiotic susceptibility.
