Sport Biochemistry Analyzers Measure Blood Lactate Concentration

By Labmedica staff writers
Posted on 18 Feb 2008
Sport biochemistry analyzers for the measurement of blood lactate acid are used during training for many types of sports, from swimming to premiership football clubs. More...
The analyzers use an enzyme immobilizer technique.

Biologic measuring dimensions of oxygen absorption, heart frequency, and blood lactate concentration form the basis of sports medicine diagnostics. Because of the minimal sensitivity of heart frequency and the limited means of measuring oxygen absorption, the blood lactate parameter has proved to have an application in performance sport.

The exercise intensity at which the aerobic mechanism can no longer cover the needs of the working muscles is generally detectable as an increase in blood lactate concentration and a disproportionate increase in the ventilation rate. This is described as the anaerobic threshold.

The YSI 2300 and 1500 Sport, products of YSI Life Sciences (Yellow Springs, OH, USA), give the required clinical accuracy and precision, as well as affordability, needed to interpret blood results into training regimes.

The YSI 2300 measures lactate in whole blood, plasma, or cerebrospinal fluid providing results in one minute or less. The immobilized enzymes do not have to be renewed after each test, minimizing the use of costly reagents and supplies. The analyzer needs a small sample size (25 µl) and is simple and safe to operate. Menu-driven software guides operators through each step. Diagnostics provide performance analysis and troubleshooting. Samples are introduced to the analyzer by tubes or syringe; no needles are required. Samples can be run in batches and each batch is assigned each identification number with date and time.

Calibration is automatic, so the analyzer is always ready. YSI immobilized enzyme technology eliminates most of the interferences that plague other methods. The broad measurement range of up to 30 mmol/l lactate virtually eliminates the need for sample dilution.

The YSI 1500 Sport lactate analyzer also uses a sample of 25µl blood and results are available in 30 seconds. It has a manual calibration mode that is displayed in 30 seconds. Sample to sample interval is 60 seconds. The automatic calibration mode is displayed in 60 seconds.
