Urine Test Determines Effects of Aspirin on Platelets

By Labmedica staff writers
Posted on 12 Feb 2008
A simple urine test measures the level of thromboxane production (aspirin's target) and determines the effect of aspirin on platelets. More...
The higher the levels of thromboxane, the stickier the blood platelets, and the less impact the aspirin is having. This important information allows physicians to individualize patients' therapy.

Called the AspirinWorks test, it requires only a urine sample that can be obtained in any doctor's office, making the test easy for both the physician and the patient. Other tests require freshly drawn blood that must be evaluated within at least four hours.

The AspirinWorks test is an enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) that determines levels of 11-dehydro thromboxane B2 (11dhTxB2) in human urine, thus aiding the qualitative detection of aspirin effect in apparently healthy individuals post-ingestion. The test targets a potential U.S. market of over 60 million individuals and a potential global market exceeding 200 million individuals.

Launched in 2007 by Corgenix Medical Corp. (Broomfield, CO, USA) the AspirinWorks test is now available to physicians and other laboratories through Quest Diagnostics Inc. (Madison, NJ, USA).

Douglass Simpson, Corgenix' president and CEO said, "This arrangement with Quest Diagnostics is great news for the increasing number of physicians and labs wanting to offer the AspirinWorks test. Some of the nation's most prominent labs are now routinely running this important test, which determines if aspirin is eliciting an effect.”
Mr. Simpson noted that additional supporting clinical data and scientific articles scheduled for publication will further enhance the scientific and clinical validation behind aspirin effect testing.

Corgenix develops and manufactures specialized diagnostic kits for immunology disorders, vascular diseases, and bone and joint disorders. Corgenix diagnostic products are commercialized for use in clinical laboratories throughout the world.
