Closed Needle-Free Urine Collection System Sets New Standard for Preanalytical Workflow

Posted on 14 Aug 2023

Laboratories are faced with the task of ensuring that the urine sample collection process is safe, simple, and hygienic. Now, an innovative enclosed and needle-free urine collection system ensures hygienic and repeatable sample collection while minimizing the risk of injury and increasing user safety.

Sarstedt’s (Nümbrecht, Germany) Needle-Free Transfer (NFT) Urine Collection System is the company’s first urine cup and urine collection container with a hygienically enclosed and needle-free collection system. The NFT system, comprising the Urine-Monovette, NFT urine cup, and NFT urine container, ensures uncompromised hygiene throughout the urine sample collection process. The need for a needle is entirely eliminated thanks to its new needle-free collection feature. The Urine Monovette effortlessly pierces through the integrated NFT membrane, making the collection process seamless and convenient. Following the collection of the sample, the membrane is instantly closed and hygienically sealed to maintain its integrity even during multiple collections. This design eliminates the risk of infections caused by accidental needlestick injuries.

The Urine Monovette allows for the hygienic, needle-free collection of urine samples from collection containers or drainage systems. Its enclosed suction tip allows laboratories to perform transfers without relying on needles, even when dealing with small filling volumes. Unlike vacuum systems, there is no need for a separate transfer unit. The Urine Monovette's aspiration principle enables the collection process to be repeated if required, safeguarding against functional loss due to incorrect usage. The meticulous design of the needle-free collection mechanism significantly reduces the likelihood of injuries to both lab personnel and patients.

After collection, the urine cup and screw cap as well as urine tubes do not require separate puncture-proof disposal, saving time and money as compared to products featuring an integrated needle. Using commercially available test strips, a urine analysis can be performed directly in the filled Urine Monovette which is also suitable for transporting and shipping as per the P650 packaging instructions by the ADR and IATA.
